Only time will tell if Ty Hahn earns a scholarship offer from Nebraska before the 2020 recruiting cycle is all said and done, but he certainly didn’t hurt himself in that quest Sunday in Lincoln.
The Johnson-Brock athlete, playing in the Huskers’ 7-on-7 tournament as part of the Steve Warren Academy’s team, continued his impressive offseason.
The team finished second to Springfield (Missouri) Glendale, but Hahn had as good a day as anybody. He played alongside several other in-state standouts including Omaha Burke wide receiver Xavier Watts, who has Nebraska in his top six along with Michigan, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Iowa State, Burke running back Jaylon Roussell (did not play Sunday), 2022 Bellevue West wide receiver Micah Riley and several others.
Hahn was one of the best testers at The Opening regional camp in St. Louis earlier this year, checking in at 6-foot-2 and 186 pounds and running 4.65 seconds in the 40-yard dash to go along with a 35-inch vertical leap.
Watts made several highlight-reel catches and also had a few drops, but overall saw plenty of attention both from defenders and the NU coaching staff. Head coach Scott Frost, offensive coordinator Troy Walters and virtually every other assistant and staffer the Huskers had on campus stopped by to say hello and lingered well after the action ended to catch up.
Watts was just on campus for an unofficial visit last weekend and will likely be around more as the summer progresses.
Hutmacher update: Nash Hutmacher has a decision timeline in mind for his football future, but wrestling will take priority for the coming weeks.
The four-star 2020 South Dakota defensive lineman just wrapped up his third and likely final official visit, this one to Wisconsin after previously seeing Nebraska and Oregon. Now he’ll turn his attention to wrestling and a pair of upcoming national tournaments, with an eye on making his football decision by the time football season starts in August.
“I’m probably just going to focus on wrestling right now and focus on training,” he told the Journal Star on Sunday.
Hutmacher is seemingly down to those three schools and all three knew what to do: Take the big guy fishing.
“I live right on the river in Chamberlain and so I’m always fishing,” he said. “We might as well do that (on visits). … I caught some walleyes, some smallmouth, white bass, rock bass and some perch, too.”
Ford enjoys getting back to Lincoln: Travion Ford is already one of the most sought-after players in the Midwest for the 2021 class. The pass-rusher from St. Louis was on campus earlier in the weekend for an unofficial visit and said he enjoyed it.
“The visit was real nice,” he told the Journal Star. “I wanted to visit because I wanted to come spend some one-on-one time with coach Frost and (defensive coordinator Erik) Chinander. They always show me a lot of love when I visit.”

News and notes
* Cal graduate transfer wide receiver Kanawai Noa joined the team officially and began working out recently, the Journal Star confirmed Sunday. Noa is listed in UNL’s student directory but is not yet on the Huskers.com online roster.
* The Huskers have all but one of their incoming freshmen on campus as of Sunday, when wide receiver Darien Chase (Vancouver, Washington) arrived. The only player not yet in Lincoln is running back Ronald Thompkins (Loganville, Georgia), who might end up being a late-summer arrival.
NU will also wait until later in the summer for junior college defensive lineman Jahkeem Green, who is taking one more class at Highland (Kanas) Community College before his scheduled move to NU in July.
* Next weekend is going to be a busy one at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska has nearly 300 kids signed up for its Friday Night Lights camp and then is approaching a 300-person cap for Saturday’s national “Pipeline” linemen camp. Both of those camps, along with June 21’s Friday Night Lights, are open to the public. FNL No. 1 begins at 6 p.m.

* Nebraska is in the midst of an important recruiting stretch. Not only do they have a lot of campers cycling through campus, but they’re also hosting several priority visitors. In addition to Watts and Ford being on campus, they had 2020 linebacker Cody Simon on an official visit and three-star 2020 pass-rusher Regen Terry (Florence, Arizona) on an unofficial visit last weekend.
This coming weekend, three-star target Blaise Gunnerson (Carroll, Iowa) takes his official visit and several others will be on campus for one or both camps. Then the weekend of June 21 will be one of the bigger recruiting weekends of the offseason. Expect NU to have several official visitors on hand for the last major on-campus push before the regular season starts in late August.
